In the lives of the Baduy People, the activities of Baduy Women Weavers are much more than just a way to pass the time; it is a deep rooted cultural duty. From a very young age, girls are introduced to traditional looms made of bamboo and wood as part of their character building.
According to local custom, a woman is considered ready for marriage once she has mastered the art of weaving. This skill is a symbol of independence, as she is expected to provide clothing for her family.
This is why you will find a weaving station on almost every wooden terrace. These Baduy Women Weavers work at the front of their homes to use natural light while staying connected with their neighbors.
The fabrics produced are filled with meaningful patterns known as Tenun Baduy, which serves as the foundation for Baduy traditional clothing. The colors follow strict rules: Inner Baduy uses white and black, while Outer Baduy uses deep indigo blue. Through the dedication of these Baduy Women Weavers, the identity of this community which values simplicity remains strong despite modern influences.
Along the road from Ciboleger Terminal, you’ll pass through several Baduy Luar villages, such as Kaduketug 1–3 (near the terminal), Balimbing, Marengo, and Gajeboh (home to the iconic Bamboo Bridge), where traditional houses serve as spaces where Baduy women showcase their weaving skills.
These homes serve as both living spaces and small galleries, offering a variety of authentic Baduy souvenirs and handwoven fabrics directly to passing visitors.
Respecting the Local Wisdom
Walking through the heart of the Baduy village is a privilege, and we are there as guests in their home. Their lives are deeply connected to nature and ancestral laws that have been preserved for centuries.
When you find yourself inspired by their daily activities, please remember to always ask for permission before pointing your camera or recording. Respecting their space and privacy is the best way to honor the beauty of their culture. A polite interaction not only helps you capture a better moment but also ensures that the warmth of their hospitality remains open for everyone.
