One of my main destination in visiting Baduy was to document the living root bridge. Located in Outer Baduy near Batara village, this bridge spans across the Cisimeut River.
Two trees on opposite sides of the river have had their roots trained for decades to intertwine horizontally, forming a natural crossing. The Baduy people truly utilize nature as a vital part of their daily mobility.
These intertwined roots have locked together for decades, creating a strong natural structure for crossing. Without the use of cement or nails, the Baduy Root Bridge actually grows firmer as the trees age.
For me, documenting this structure is about capturing the harmony between humans and the local ecosystem that remains authentically preserved.
It is approximately 145 km from Monas in Central Jakarta by car via the Jakarta–Merak toll road. For those who prefer a more leisurely journey, public transportation such as the Commuter Line and Damri buses are excellent options. Taking a Damri bus from Rangkasbitung Station will take you directly to Ciboleger Terminal.
From the terminal, the journey continues with a 1-hour trek through the picturesque villages of Baduy Luar and Kampung Batara; alternatively, local motorbike taxis are available for a faster trip. In addition to this Root Bridge, you can also visit another iconic bridge, the Gajeboh Bamboo Bridge in Outer Baduy.

You can find more license-ready Commercial and Editorial photos and videos, featuring our specialized Nature and Agriculture collections in Indonesia.
